A message to Parishioners from Fr Simeon Anthony...

Dear Parishioners of St Elizabeth’s,
"Peace be with you." (John 20:19) For those who may not know me yet, my name is Father Simeon Anthony and I am blessed to begin serving as your new Parish Administrator. I am deeply thankful to our most Reverend Archbishop Peter A Comensoli for entrusting me with the pastoral care of this community. As many of you remember, I was given the humbling privilege of being the preacher at Father Tad’s funeral Mass. Standing at the altar, looking out at all of you, I saw something extraordinary. Amidst the tears and the shock, I witnessed a beautiful, powerful reality. I saw parish leaders stepping up to support one another. I saw volunteers quietly taking care of the logistics. I saw a community that refused to fracture, choosing instead to lean on one another and work together in the darkest hour. I didn't see a broken, scattered flock; I saw a deeply formed parish family putting their faith into immediate action. That powerful image of your unity stayed with me, and it is exactly why I am filled with such hope as I step into the role of your new parish administrator |
Let’s reflect the Visitation of Mother Mary to St Elizabeth. The scripture says Mary sets out "in haste" to the hill country, to the house of Elizabeth. Why did Mary run to Elizabeth? Because she needed someone who understood. She needed a safe space. Elizabeth, too, was living through an unexpected, miraculous, and overwhelming situation. When these two women meet, they don't immediately start organising, planning, or changing their lives. First, they simply greet each other. They share their burdens. They validate each other's reality.
My friends, this parish is currently in its own "hill country." We are navigating a steep, rocky path of grief. As your new priest, I see myself today as Mary or Elizabeth coming to meet you at the doorway. I am here to share this heavy space with you. Because I stood with you at Father Tad’s funeral, I am ready to continue walking with you now. I am here to listen to your stories of Father Tad, to hear your anxieties about the future, and to carry this burden with you.
Also, notice what happens the moment Mary greets Elizabeth. The scripture tells us that the infant in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In the midst of uncertainty, heavy hearts, and overwhelming transitions, the presence of Christ brings an unexpected spark of life.
This tells us something profound about our own healing. Healing from the loss of a priest does not mean we stop missing him. It means that, eventually, through our tears, we begin to feel the Holy Spirit moving in our midst again. We realise that while the shepherd has changed, the Lord of the Harvest remains the same.
Father Tad spent his entire priesthood doing exactly what Mary did: bringing Jesus to you. The greatest way we can honour his memory today is to allow our hearts to "leap" open to the Holy Spirit, trusting that Jesus is still alive, active, and working through the very parish leaders and community members I saw working so beautifully together at the funeral.
The Visitation ends with Mary singing her great prayer, the Magnificat, proclaiming: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." She sang those words before she knew how everything would turn out. She sang them in faith.
Let us walk together like Mother Mary and St. Elizabeth. My priority is to listen, learn, and get to know the St Elizabeth’s School and Parish community. Whether you are a lifelong parishioner, someone returning to the Church, or a visitor joining us for the first time, please know that you have a home here.
I look forward to working together with you all for the greater glory of God. Please keep me in your prayers, and let us continue to pray for the eternal repose of Father Tad.
